Dances of Universal Peace (begun by the Sufi teacher Murshid Samuel Lewis) are a means to revivify our love and joy, and integrate ourselves with the power of Peace through the practice of meditative circle dances and walks, with singing and chanting of Divine Names and sacred phrases from many spiritual traditions.

We cultivate compassion within and without.....
Finding our home in the breath.....
Practicing simple presence and body awareness.....
                   Re-membering our Divine Source......
Resonating with sound and loving intention......
For the benefit of all beings.

No dance experience needed, everyone is welcome. We form the circle together!

Upcoming Events: Sunday July 5 - Gospel Zikr: 7 pm at Servanthood House, 156 E. Chestnut Street in Asheville. The meaning of zikr is remembrance. The Sufis chant, sing, and move together in the zikr, opening their hearts to the Beloved as a community. Perry Pike grew up in rural Arkansas, attending a one-room country church with his family. His childhood memories of ecstatic singing led him to connect Sufi zikr to gospel music. This was the topic of his recently completed graduate thesis at Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley. Developing a Christian Zikr was his way to bridge the two faith communities. Perry's heart's desire has been to teach Christians how to chant and move together in a group worship context similar to the Dances of Universal Peace and/or Sufi zikr. He's wanted to show his childhood Christian community how to pray with their whole bodies, minds, and hearts. He's also wanted Sufis to taste the sweet and joyful ecstasy of gospel music. This zikr is a group practice with simple movements, some chanting in English, and familiar old Christian hymns like This Little Light of Mine, and Glory Glory Halleluia, since I laid my burdens down (sung to the tune of Will the circle be unbroken...). As the circle experiences deep joy and ecstatic listening to the collective heart, Perry embraces his two loves in one form. Suggested minimum donation is $ 5.

Lutheridge Conference Center Nov 6-8, 2009 --The Way of Renewal: Healing Pathways of the Heart This public workshop with Neil Douglas Klotz will select healing resources from the rich treasure of the "pathways of the heart" found in the Sufi practice of the 99 Beautiful Names. For several decades, Saadi has specialized in adapting ancient Sufi practices to the everyday challenges of modern life, and in 2005 produced a new translation of these practices in The Sufi Book of Life. The focus for this workshop will be on the many pathways that deal with strength, renewal, releasing, trust, being at home in the body, and increasing clarity in relationship with one's inner healing guidance. As resources we will use chant, heart meditation, walking meditation, body prayer, whirling and other forms of sacred movement and body awareness. The retreat aims to guide participants through a process that promotes freedom, growth and joy along with better understanding of oneself and others. Contact: Lucy Oliver, 1-828-225-0515
